3 Movies You Missed But Shouldn’t Have
Every year dozens of great movies fly straight under the radar only to be discovered on a particularly adventurous evening of random movie selection years later. Let this sidebar be a guiding hand for the next time you’re looking for something a little different. Here are our top picks for movies you missed.
Come to Daddy
Support local by watching a hipster version of Elijah Wood get into a hilariously violent reunion with his dad. Directed by Kiwi Ant Timpson, this black comedy horror movie is a fun ride. Layers of mystery overlaid with moments that shouldn’t be as funny as they end up being. I give it 10 bad haircuts out of 10.
Shadow in the Cloud
Directed by another local, Roseanne Liang, goes full guns blazing in this pulpy B-grade creature feature. Chloe Grace Moretz pulls off an amazing performance battling cartoonish chauvinistic pigs and flying gremlins in a WWII era flight from Auckland to Samoa. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this film, and I don’t know why. If you hate fun, please avoid this one.
Sputnik
Ok I’m done plugging the NZ Film Industry. Sputnik is a Russian language take on Alien. It hits all the right beats and is sufficiently fresh enough to make its way into cult classic status. If you don’t watch it now you’ll have to in a couple years when it starts showing up on more lists like this one.
