Must Watch This Month
All the blockbusters are dropping around us at the moment and we’re heading on toward the middle of the year.
But don’t worry, there won’t be a complete drought. There are a couple decent films coming out to keep us interested.
ATOMIC BLONDE
Academy award winner Charlize Theron does a gritty and awesome take on the British spy genre. She’s pretty but she isn’t your typical femme fatale. In fact the fighting seems more visceral and brawly than anything Daniel Craig brought to the James Bond franchise.
This will be David Leitch’s first solo credit for directing a film after he put John Wick together with Chad Stahelski. This is one to watch!
VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS
Valerian is your sci-fi ticket to crazy town. Based on a French comicbook series and brought to life by the director of 5th element it’s going to make the colourful worlds of Guardians of the Galaxy look more conservative than .
Starring Dane DeHaanas Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, the couple are special operatives who safeguard human territories across the universe. A sinister plot emerges in Alpha, a metropolis that is the melting pot of every intelligent species in the universe. Humanity attempts to save the day.
LOGAN LUCKY
Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Oceans 11) comes a comedy heist movie with all the oddball ensemble you need for a film like this to work. Except instead of swaggering around Vegas in suits it’s a bunch of hicks swaggering around the midwest. Soderbergh himself actually described it as an “anti-glam” version of the Oceans films.
It features a great star studded cast with Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Katie Holmes and Daniel Craig, who looks terrifying. I guess he heard what I said about Atomic Blonde and took some notes. Wrong notes Craig.
THE DARK TOWER
You may recognise The Dark Tower as that book series Stephen King has been keeping second hand book stores in business with. Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey the science fantasy western action horror film (I’m not sure how many genres you can pack in there) is going to be a real ride.
However I can’t imagine packing eight books worth of story into one film is going to do it any favours and I doubt it’ll stand up to the horror tag it’s given itself.
