The M2 Luxury Watch Guide 2019 – G-Shock
There’s nothing quite like the craftsmanship, style and feel of a luxury watch. Some may say that watches are all created the same, and this may be true in some cases, but for others they are more like true works of art. Big names like Rolex, Seiko, TAG Heuer and G-SHOCK are renown for hand-crafting elegant pieces that will stand the test of time. They certainly give the wearer a feeling of grandeur and coolness that ooze supremacy and prestige.
We at M2 want to share the best watches on the market and have put together a list of pieces that we think fully represents the classy man.
G-SHOCK MR-G MRG-G2000GA
Established in 1946 by Tadao Kashio, Casio is a reputable brand of electronic goods. Think calculators, mobile phones, digital cameras, musical instruments and, most importantly, watches. In 1986, Casio launched their G-SHOCK range and have truly defined the look for digital watches for years to come. The MR-G, a flagship series of their G-SHOCKs, released their MRG-G2000GA watch in March this year and it’s certainly a watch that combines the artistry of Casio’s history and the shock of the future. It takes inspiration from the traditional Japanese sword and the aesthetic of master craftsmanship and this model is hand-finished by Sadanobu Gassan, a master craftsman in the world-renowned Gassan tradition of Japanese swordsmiths.
The design reflects the Japanese heritage. The wristband takes inspiration from the tang of a
sword, with its centre band featuring a pattern modelled after traditional swordsmith patterns. Take its case, for example, which is made from recrystallised titanium that gives the sparkling appearance of a newly polished sword. An Arc Ion Plating treatment is put on the watch to give it a purple hue, which is traditionally associated with nobility in Japan. The MRG-G2000GA features GPS satellite and Bluetooth. It is water resistant up to 200 meters, compatible to times in 39 cities and includes a tough solar-power system.
Limited to only 300 units worldwide, the MRGG2000GA will be available to purchase in NZ.
RRP$12,999.
G-Shock MRG-G2000HA
The MRG-G2000HA is inspired by the “tetsu-tsuba” of Japanese swords. Tetsu-tsuba are the forged iron plates that guard the hands above the handle of the sword and often have intricate designs carved into them. The bezel and inner band sections of the MRG-G2000HA are designed in the image of tetsu-tsuba. They are handcrafted in collaboration with Asano Biho using the “hammer tone” technique resulting in a striking bronze bezel with a traditional Japanese texture.
The case and band links also receive a special coating treatment with Arc Ion Plating (AIP) by Kobe Steel, resulting in a deep gunmetal-like colour and a deep-layer hardening for high abrasion resistance. The colours of the watch are based on the aesthetic quality of “murasaki-gane” (deep violet metal) and “suaka” (copper). The result is a distinctive regal look that exudes strength and pays homage to Japanese craft traditions.
The watch features Connected Engine 3-Way module which pairs with a smartphone to automatically update the watch’s data. The watch also features tough solar, 200-meter water resistance, GPS, Bluetooth, time capability for 39 cities, stop-watch and alarm.
Limited to only 350 units worldwide, the MRGG2000HA is available to purchase in NZ.
