David Gray, Partner At Daniel Overton & Goulding Lawyers Talks Best Advice
What advice would you give your 20 year-old self?
Face up to your problems and challenges. Your weaknesses have more to teach you than your strengths. So try, fail and learn.
Also, get used to the smell of rich mahogany and leather bound books.
How do you stay motivated?
Wanting to be the best possible husband and dad helps motivate me to get things done efficiently. That way, I have more time to do the things I want to do.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I’d still want to be a lawyer, just a bit less often. More time with family and friends. More time outside.
What is the secret to success?
Empathy. Being an empathic person will bring success in your personal and professional life. It’s all about having good relationships.
What is the worst mistake you’ve made and how did you fix it?
You can’t really fix mistakes. You apologise, try to learn from them, and try not to repeat them.
What is your advice for people to fund their dream?
Make a plan for how the dream is to become a reality. Once you have a plan, get out there and talk to people who have dreamed and won.
What is the best bit of advice, or quote, that resonates with you?
So many. Plan for the worst and you will only have pleasant surprises. Questions you cannot answer are usually far better for you than answers you cannot question. All that is needed for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Orphans Kitchen. Great food. Great drinks. Great people. Always an amazing night.
How do you keep up to date with current affairs?
BBC.
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
Do things you love, with people you love. Sleep whenever you can. Drink good whiskey.
What makes you feel alive?
The Sun. Family. Friends. Good conversation. A fantastic book. Great music.
