Drive Me To The Future
Before Covid-19 took over the world, at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, the announcement of the new Lexus LF-30 concept really got everyone’s attention. The announcement excited the eager fans as it showcased the way the future of Lexus will be completely electronic. Also its gullwing doors are, by far, the coolest feature of this concept.
At 5,090 millimetres, the concept car is actually bigger than it looks. The illusion is justified, however, allowing it to store four electric motors – one for each wheel. With the four wheels being powered with a combined 536 horsepower and 700 Newton-metres of torque, the concept car can hit speeds of 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and can get up to 200 on full-throttle. You’ll notice one crucial element missing, however. The concept car is missing a charging port. This, according to Takashi Watanabe, chief engineer at Lexus, is to show the necessity of wireless conduction capabilities. Though that sort of technology is a while away and may not eventualise, it’s good to see that the idea and necessity of this type of technology is in the pipe-line.
On the inside of the car, the cabin is fitted out with a futuristic steering wheel that retracts when in autonomous mode. Yep, of course, this concept car will be self-driven! On the display pad on the steering wheel, switchgears and speed will play away as the driver is driving. The car also gets controlled by gestures too. From a completely glass-covered roof, screens will hang for the passengers to watch on-drive entertainment or connect to others. And those doors look like something from Back to the Future, reaching up as the drivers or passengers asend from the vehicle.
Hopefully, this concept car will be hitting the ground in 2023 for pre-order.
