Man On The Street – Dominic Sutton
Age: 44
Occupation: CEO Pumpt Advertising & Investor
What’s your morning routine?
I get up at around 7am, I play Joe Rogan podcasts or listen to e-books while showering and shaving. Breakfast is either porridge or an omelette. While eating I skim the News, read an article I have saved in Pocket and I check emails then head into work or meetings.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
This year, I am going to tick off sailing around Croatia, go to Burning Man, and visit Portugal for a couple of weeks.
What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
Don’t believe everything you hear, and things are not always what they seem. Listen more to people that share their experiences, particularly hardships, there are lessons in every tale. Worry less about what people think about you.
How do you think the World will change over the next 20 years?
I believe we will have fully electric vehicles, and most will be autonomous. I have a Tesla and it opens your eyes to what is possible, and this is just the start! Preventative health and nutrition will become a big focus from governments once they realise the cost of keeping unhealthy people alive longer. Everyday electronic items will become more intuitive, and clean water will become an issue for counties and cities.
How do you stay motivated?
I think about dying early! Thats usually enough to shake me out of any slumber! My father died at 43, you never know when your time is up. I would hate to feel I had procrastinated on anything important, and I don’t want regrets.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I would like to help young people from underprivileged backgrounds (like I was myself) to gain some skills not taught in skills for a life different than what they may have now. I believe that with the right attitude and focus, anything is possible for anyone here in New Zealand.
What is your secret to success?
I don’t think it is a secret, but I have always been able to spot an opportunity, or see where things are going to end up. Listening or ‘seeing between the lines’ is a good success secret.
What’s the best bit of advice or quote that resonates with you?
I like one liners like ‘If its to be, its up to me’ and ‘Fortune favours the brave’. I always knew that just dreaming was not enough, you have to get off your butt and execute.
What is your favourite restaurant?
I like my local, Deep Creek in Browns Bay for casual dining and a few IPA’s. Nice beers, great food, decent outlook, and the kids can skate at the park while I am sitting in the sun enjoying it all. I mix it up when in the city, no particular favourite, but Soul is good for people watching and I do like their fish dishes.
What is your secret to living longer, more satisfying life?
Travel often, have interesting and meaningful conversations, eat wholesome natural food, keep up the weight training as you get older, get plenty of sleep, regular sunlight preferably near the beach. And eliminate stressful drama from your day.
What makes you feel alive?
Laughing. I also am fond of being in a ‘very’ foreign location, having a few drinks in the sun, watching the world go by. Its good for reflecting and observing, and that makes me feel very thankful to be alive.
