Man on the Street: Patrick Moynahan
Occupation: Managing Director, Computer Recycling
Age: 30
What’s your morning routine?
I’m not naturally a morning person, however I make an effort to start the day around 5:30 to keep on top of things. I don’t have a strict routine, but usually my mornings consist of clearing my inbox to plan and prioritise my tasks for the day, followed by a quick work-out, a strong coffee, and then into the office.
What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
One; continue to grow Computer Recycling and push for further e-waste recycling framework in NZ. Two; travel overseas more – when borders open up – for both work and personal. Lastly; conquer the remaining ‘7 Summits’ – the highest mountains on each continent. So far, I’ve been lucky enough to climb Kilimanjaro, Mont Blanc and Aconcagua.
What advice would you give your 20 year-old self?
It might not always seem like you’re on the right path career-wise, but every job or project – no matter how small – is a learning opportunity and contributes to your growth.
How do you keep up to date with current affairs?
Nothing too special; I read the local news online a few times a day. I like to keep up to date with industry happenings by consistently keeping in touch, and often collaborating with, other people and businesses who work in the waste sector.
How do you stay motivated?
I like to engage with inspiring people – those who work in the same or similar industries, but also people who are doing interesting and exciting things in their own fields. Seeing other peoples’ success motivates me to push myself harder. I also have a growing family, and so caring and providing for those I love is very important to me.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I would spend more time with my family and in the outdoors. This being said, I really enjoy what I do. If money wasn’t an issue, I would love to see just how far I could push the recycling industry in New Zealand.
What is the best bit of advice, or quote, that resonates with you?
Pressure makes diamonds.
What is the secret to success?
Always pushing to be better. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve the work I’m doing and the mission our company is on.
What is your advice for people to fund their dream?
Make a business case – rationalise how the model will generate revenue and profit. Work with banks or investors until you are confident, then jump feet first!
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Anywhere new! I love trying different places.
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
Pushing yourself to keep busy and work towards both professional and personal goals. In saying that, it’s great to have balance in your life and ensure you’re taking time out to relax and check in with yourself.
What makes you feel alive?
Traveling overseas to go mountaineering, and adventure travel!
