There’s Nothing to See Here on the Nothing Phone
Never has there been so much hype over Nothing. The London based Nothing tech company has somehow found itself at the head of a hypetrain for its Phone (1). At the end of June, it started opening for pre-orders with over 100,000 people ending up on the waitlist in no time at all. But what are they buying? The most stripped back quality product on the market, picking up where Apple left off.
The Design Director is former Dyson design lead, Adam Bates, and the end result is a beautifully utilitarian product. Here’s what we know currently. The back has a transparent case with 900 notification LEDs strategically placed in a glyph pattern. It can tell you a whole lot about what’s going on in your digital life without ever having to see the screen. A bottom strip near the USB-C charging base slowly fills as it charges. It can also act as a fill light for photography. Different light patterns can also flash up for different contacts when they hit you up. The customisation of these things goes pretty deep in this regard. Personally I like that it goes into silent mode when flipped on its face. The less I hear from my phone, the better.
It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ SoC chipset and its own Nothing OS based on Android 12. Other rumoured specs include an Octo-core CPU and an Adreno 642L GPU powering its 6.55” screen with a 1080 x 2400 resolution screen.
Co-founder of both OnePlus and Nothing, Carl Pei, says of the Phone (1), “Smartphones used to excite us, now they’re mundane. We hope that the Nothing Phone (1) is the wake up call this industry needs”. We hope so as well. Fingers crossed this isn’t all just a ton of hype.
