Photo Series: Above Us Only Sky
As far as photographic disciplines go, drone photography is a new one. There was a time when you’d have to mooch a ride off a helicopter pilot to get aerial shots. This meant that overhead shots were rare and the domain of professionals with the clout and resources to pull it off.
Now the skies have been democratised by drones, if you have the cash for it. Their casual nature means people are able to get all sorts of interesting shots we may have only dreamed of previously. The Siena Awards have set out to honour this new craft with the Drone Photo Awards 2022. A total of 2,624 Photographers from over 116 countries entered but ultimately there could only be one winner for each of the 9 categories: Urban, People, Wildlife, Nature, Sports, Abstract, Storyboard, Wedding and finally video, which we will not be featuring on this stack of paper.
If you find yourself in Europe, you can see more of the exhibition in Siena, Italy from October 1st through to November 20th. Beautiful place, worthy of a good drone shot if you ask me.
Big Bang
by Armand Sarlangue
This epic shot is actually a photo of a secondary fissure on an erupting Fagradalsfjall volcano. You may have seen a drone flying around a park in perfect conditions, but this shot had to be taken in some of the most extreme the world has to offer. A storm was just hitting the mainland and rain and strong winds were coming in, making this shot tricky but ultimately worth the effort. This shot won photo of the year.
Rooftops of Kartoffelraekkerne Neighborhood
by Serhiy Vovk
Østerbro in Copenhagen may look like a cookie cutter neighbourhood from this perspective. The homes made in the 1800s were for working class families, since then this area has exploded into an upscale family-oriented neighbourhood. Where does the working class live now?
Solidarity

There’s safety and warmth in numbers, and Mehdi Mohebipour found beauty in the lightly repeating patterns of these flamingos.
Learning Life
by Florian Ledoux
Ledoux spent five months in the field on the east coast of Svalbard to capture this image of a young polar beer playing in the ice. Svalbard sits somewhere between the North Pole and Norway. It’s the same island with that Arctic Seed Vault by the way.

Snake Eyes

A copper mine distorted the natural scenery, where there used to be the village of Geamana, Alba county. This picture was taken in winter, with the ice melting and making these interesting forms.
