First Look at Sophie Turner’s Tomb Raider
Ever since Angelina Jolie took on the role of one of videogames most iconic heroines we’ve had expectations of what to expect from the character. Much like Indiana Jones, they ARE incredibly attractive and Are able to handle themselves in TOUGH situationS. No offence to Alicia Vikander but it didn’t look like she could handle getting the wrong order from Tank.
Tomb Raider (2018) did its best to ground her athleticism by making her a cyclist etc, but overall the film lacked something, and I’m not about to waste two hours of my life again to find out what that was for our greater edification. Let’s just say it was a miscast in general tied to a script afraid of its own source material.
Now it’s Sophie Turner’s turn as the titular grave disturber in a new show for Amazon created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. We don’t know much about what to expect from the series yet, But we have received our first look at Turner in costume, which is more reminiscent of the PS1/PS2 aesthetic rather than the modern series of Tomb Raider, which gives me hope they take themselves a little less seriously. She won the role over Emma Mackey and Lucy Boynton. Filming should be starting as this issue goes out, but she’s been preparing for the role for a year now getting into shape. It’s co-starring Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs and is directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken.
“I can’t say much, but my preparation began in February this year (2025).” Turner told ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley. “I’ve been training for a long time now, coming up on a year, and we’re going to start shooting in January. I’m really excited, but I feel prepped, and I feel really lucky to have such a great relationship with Amazon, and I’m excited for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it’s going to be something special.”
