2026 RAV4 : A global benchmark
Toyota has maintained a position of leadership in the New Zealand market for an enviable 38 consecutive years. In 2025, the company achieved record sales of more than 34,000 vehicles. Across Corolla, RAV4 and Hilux, Toyota defines the concept of the car for the New Zealand public. Not surprising that the RAV4 is now the best selling vehicle in both the world and New Zealand. It remains the benchmark for the segment and the industry.
Thirty years of evolution through six generations changed the RAV4 from a funky, compact 3 door into a sophisticated family machine. Maturity has replaced the playful youth of previous models and now the vehicle is a capable leader in the global market. No longer a party ride for a teenager, the RAV4 is a tool for family practicality and real world function. This quality is apparent upon taking the wheel of the latest model. The machine meets the needs of the realworld driver.

Toyota invited M2 to the launch of this sixth iteration. A small market, yet Toyota recognizes that New Zealand is important to the brand. In the same way, Toyota is important to New Zealand having been here for 60+ years.. The company underscored this relationship by bringing RAV4 Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane to the country for the launch. Project Manager Hirofumi Yuge, the man responsible for the execution of the project, joined him.
These men built their careers on a love for cars. A mention of a Supra or a 2JZ engine causes their interest to peak. Yoshinori Futonagane joined the Toyota engine department in 1999. He began work on earlier versions of the RAV4 in 2010 so possesses knowledge of the car that spans more than a decade. Value exists in a team with 15 years of experience in the refinement of a single vehicle. Hirofumi Yuge joined the company in 2005 and after many years in safety, he started working on this latest design in 2021!

Futonagane san describes the vehicle as spacious, capable, and efficient. It is suited in equal measure to weekday commuting, school runs, and regional travel. It also serves weekend activities such as mountain biking, surfing, or travel out of the city. The design of the new generation RAV4 follows the concept: “Life is an Adventure.” Futonagane san highlights the importance of this concept in New Zealand where recreation is a vital part of life.
CEO Tatsuya Ishikawa attended the event to emphasize the importance of this vehicle in the Toyota lineup. A friendly and engaging man, he expresses genuine respect for New Zealand customers and market alike. The way he puts it: Customers here are informed. They think with care about their decisions. They expect honesty, value, and performance. In other words, the customers in this country expect a lot from a vehicle. In many ways RAV4 is the vehicular expression of our country – and that is who this authour believes Japan see us as a critical market.

Ishikawa san and Futonagane san express confidence in the reasons the car sells with such success in this country. Ishikawa san believes the reason is simple: the RAV4 hits the sweet spot for many kinds of New Zealand drivers. It is a versatile vehicle. The size suits families, couples, and individuals who want a roomy SUV for an adventuring lifestyle and weekly activities. Driving in central Auckland presents a contrast to driving in rural Waikato or central Otago. A single technology solution will not meet every need with success.
Toyota follows a multi-pathway powertrain strategy: hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric, and hydrogen technologies in parallel. This strategy aims to deliver choice to customers. It allows for the reduction of emissions in a practical and achievable manner. This model is the first Toyota in New Zealand to feature full Toyota Connected Services – connectivity that enhances many vehicle functions, live updates, and app support.

The range caters to different lifestyles through a variety of options. Each choice utilizes a 2.5L engine in combination with hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems. The vehicle offers 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive configurations. Different trims are available to suit preferences. Power output starts at 143kW. The top-tier powertrain delivers a punch with 221 kW.

My test showed the vehicle glides on highways and also handles gravel roads with ease – I could navigate terrain with confidence. The solid chassis provides quality natural road holding. In challenging environments, the RAV4 remains unflustered. This mechanical focus makes the RAV4 a versatile tool for country escapes after the completion of a commute.

The commitment from the Japanese leadership team is evident. The presence of their country CEO plus their key people Project manager Hirofumi Yuge and Chief Engineer Yoshinori Futonagane shows the level of commitment to the New Zealand market. Futonagane san and Yuge san have ensured that the six generations of the RAV4 result in a vehicle of substance that lasts the distance. I for one can confirm they have continued this tradition.
