Advice For Your 20 Year Old Self
Doron Whaite
Occupation: General Manager of QT Auckland
Age: 35
What’s your morning routine?
I’ve trained myself to wake up early! This is made possible by a soul-restoring coffee as I trot down to the gym. Following the gym is my favourite part of the morning – breakfast! It’s usually scrambled eggs, avocado and smoked salmon.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
Explore every inch of beautiful New Zealand. I can’t wait to get to know the locals in every city and see and do everything on offer.
Spend a vintage working in a winery.
Cement QT Auckland in every local and international traveller’s bucket list!
What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
Take your bloody earring out!
How do you stay motivated?
Positivity. It’s one of the most powerful tools one can turn on or off.
Opening QT Auckland in the midst of a global pandemic has cemented my resolve that you can only affect the things within your control. Staying calm, grounded and positive will navigate you through anything that comes your way.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I’d be living in Burgundy, on a small plot of land surrounded by vineyards, drinking Chardonnay until I’m rosy in the cheeks with six dogs at my feet.
What is the secret to success?
Being unafraid of failure and committed to being better than yesterday.
What is the worst mistake you’ve made and how did you fix it?
The earring I wish I’d told 20-year-old me not to get. I don’t think I ever completely fixed it as I still have the mark which serves as a constant reminder…
What is your advice for people to fund their dream?
Commitment! It has nothing to do with money and everything to do with how much you believe in it. If you are fully committed to your dream, you will find a way (or inspire someone with the means to fund it!)
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
Balance. No matter how wide that pendulum may swing at times.
What makes you feel alive?
People.
That’s why I got into this industry and why I’ll never leave! I’m fueled by the energy and motivations of others – whether it be in my personal life with loved ones, at work watching my team kick goals, or interacting with our wonderful guests.
