Beer & Cider Ambassador @ Coca-Cola Amatil NZ, Craig MacKenzie, on the Best Restaurants
What is the secret to success?
One word : Whanaungatanga. This means building a strong relationship through shared experiences while working together, which provides people with a sense of belonging. I am a firm believer in growing collective relationships and networks. I would not be where I am without those I have supported or those who have supported me. I encourage others to adopt this as a core value both personally and within their businesses.
What is the worst mistake you’ve made and how did you fix it?
Believing my own bullshit! I thought I was indestructible, indefatigable and at times have let my ego overinflate. As often as possible I try to put myself out of my comfort zone and surround myself with people who can further my growth, knowledge and career. I am super excited to be back at CCAmatil as part of the Alcohol Ambassador Team for precisely this reason.
What is your advice for people to fund their dream?
NDA’s are worth their weight in gold. Use them. Don’t be scared to ask for help, financial or otherwise.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
This is a particularly difficult question. I live and breathe hospitality! I’ll keep this to my stomping ground and my go-to’s for ease:
SPQR has been a favourite go-to of mine for literally 20 years. They win the lifetime achievement award for leaving me with a smile on my dial since 1997.
Worthy mentions are :
Satya Spice and Chai Lounge on K’Rd (late night amazingness!)
21 Days (the truffle chipotle horseradish bearnaise sauce is life changing)
Canton Café for any group/family gathering (black chilli prawns are life)
Giraffe by Simon Gault for the perfect spot to host VIP’s.
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
IPA? Seriously though if I find it, I’ll capture it, package it and take it to market… until then my approach is not to take life too seriously, don’t sweat the small stuff, and spread the love.
What makes you feel alive?
The LOVE. I am a hugger. I like to give what I want back from people: big smiles, great hugs and amazing beers!
