Big Screen Featuring Shang-Chi And More…
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings puts assassin and Kung-fu master, Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience), front and centre. Throughout the film he discovers the shadowy world of the Ten Rings, an organisation hinted at for some time within the MCU. As a fish out of water, he must discover himself, his past and his latent abilities. Origin stories are always the best hero flicks.
Way back in 2014, the then unknown Simu Liu tweeted at Marvel; “Hey @Marvel, great job with Cpt America and Thor. Now how about an Asian American hero?”
Nobody expected anything to come of such an innocuous tweet. Four years later, he gets a call. It was Mickey Mouse himself and he wanted Liu to join him in the magical world of Marvel Stardom. That’s not an offer you refuse.
A movie featuring the character has been kicking around since 2001, well before the MCU was even a glimmer on Disney’s bottom line.
But we’ve waited long enough, and this release puts Shang-Chi firmly into place for the fourth phase of the MCU as it begins building its new team.

Candyman
A spiritual successor to the 1992 classic of the same name, Candyman takes place in a now gentrified Chicago where rumours of a man with a hook for a hand appears if you say his name five times in a row. Would be easy to give this film a pass if it wasn’t for Jordan Peele’s writing credit on this film. Original actor, Tony Todd, also makes an appearance.
In cinemas 26 August
VENOM: Let There Be Carnage
If you didn’t enjoy the first Venom movie, you’re dead inside. This sequel to the 2018 anti-hero Marvel movie lives up to its predecessor. Directed by Andy Serkis, our protagonist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) tries getting on his feet as a journalist again. After interviewing a serial killer, the subject turns into fan favourite, Carnage, as per the title.

The Sideshow
The Various Species Of Snobbery
You get a lot of recommendations from different people. You already have a catalogue of who’s opinions you trust and who you discount immediately. Now let’s individually categorise them .
The Scattershot
They’ll give you two great recommendations in a row and then they’ll say, “Hey, that Mortal Engines movie was pretty neato,” destroying your trust in them forever. These people only accidentally like good movies.
The Conscientious Snob
This is a close friend. They have an idea of your tastes and don’t want to ruin their reputation with you by recommending any old trash. This will make most of their recommendations timid and they’ll only overstate their love for a film if they think you’ll never get round to watching it. Of course you still won’t because you’re a busy guy who likes making their own poor decisions.
They’ll ask if you’ve had a chance to catch Children of Men yet. They’ve been asking you that since it was released. You say no and jot it down as a reminder on a note you immediately lose.
The Fanboy
This is normally the latest boyfriend of your partner’s best friend. You’re forced to hang out. They have taste in movies, but good lord, don’t get them talking about their favourite trashy franchise.
