The R12 is the latest iteration in BMW Motorrad’s retro lineup, replacing the popular R nineT. It offers a blend of classic styling and modern technology, to satisfy both nostalgic riders and those looking for a more refined experience. With its iconic air-cooled boxer twin engine, updated chassis, and an array of customization options, the R12 is a thoughtfully evolved motorcycle that balances heritage and innovation, offering a range of options and configurations.
Powering the R12 lies the familiar 1170cc, air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine carried over from it’s predecessor. The engine delivers 95hp for the standard (109hp for the NineT version), with 110Nm torque making short work of any demands. The mill retains the characteristic charm of BMW’s big boxers. Rocking gently idle adds to the bike’s distinctive personality, making it stand out in the retro segment. The torque-led delivery is especially enjoyable; it pulls strongly from low down and maintaining a linear surge all the way through the rev range. This makes for effortless riding, whether cruising along country lanes or tackling tighter, twisty roads.
The three riding modes—’Road,’ ‘Rain,’ and ‘Dynamic’—each adjust the bike’s throttle response, traction control, and engine braking to suit different riding conditions. ‘Road’ mode provides a balanced setup ideal for most situations, while ‘Rain’ mode softens the throttle and increases traction control sensitivity for slippery surfaces. ‘Dynamic’ mode sharpens the bike’s responses, providing a more assertive experience that brings out the sporty character of the engine. An optional quickshifter is available for seamless gear changes, adding to the bike’s ridability.
The R12 is a pleasure to ride. Once you’re moving, it doesn’t show its size, yet it certainly gets attention. It’s hard to beat for cruising in good weather… stopping near the beach, having a coffee… where you watch everyone admiring your bike. I love going for longer rides, so I took a 200 km route along coast roads and through hills. It’s very sporty for a retro. Not an out-and-out sports bike, but immensely fast, enjoy the ride—it’s a thrill. The combination of raw power output, sensitive brakes, and great handling makes it a bike that is not only exhilarating but also quite accessible for experienced riders. A low seat height of 754mm, combined with the wide handlebars, ensures a comfortable and accessible riding position for a wide range of riders.
The handling is impressive, offering a composed and intuitive ride that eats up corners. Its longer wheelbase, relaxed steering geometry, and well-balanced weight distribution, provides a stable and confident ride whether cruising leisurely or tackling corners. The fully adjustable forks and adjustable monoshock rear, balances comfort with the ability to handle spirited riding, while the brakes, featuring four-pot radial monobloc calipers and BMW’s ABS Pro system, provide strong and confident stopping power.
BMW has clearly paid attention to detail in every aspect of the R12. The build quality is exceptional, with every part of the bike refined and premium quality. The ‘Option 719’ version we rode takes it further, adding billet aluminum components and a unique paint scheme that makes the bike stand out even more. And it grew on me, I kept finding new details that progressively made it harder to give back.
The BMW R12 is a bike that has evolved in all the right ways. It remains true to its retro roots, offering a riding experience that’s as full of character plus the modern conveniences. It is a motorcycle that delivers an authentic and engaging experience, combined with reliability and build quality. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the air-cooled boxer or new to the world of classic-inspired bikes, this machine offers a blend of old-school charm and contemporary performance that is hard to resist.
