How to Build a Strong Personal Brand as an Entrepreneur
How to Build a Strong Personal Brand as an Entrepreneur – Tips for developing a personal brand that communicates your values, expertise, and unique value proposition.
When I came to New Zealand in 2009, I didn’t know a single person (except my wife who came with me), therefore creating a personal brand has been critical to me and my businesses’ success. Traditionally, I am someone that has shied away from the spotlight. However, in 2009, I made the decision to face the fear and do it anyway.
Trust
My core value / my why is trust. I will always do the right thing by my team and customers. If I say I am going to do something, I will do it, no matter what. I believe that an entrepreneur really needs to understand their personal values and then use those values to align with their brand as an entrepreneur. I believe the founder’s values permeate everything about a business, including the people, product and company trajectory.
Be an expert
It should be a given that you know your business and industry well. What really sets someone apart from your competitors is likely how you position and promote yourself. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and express your opinions, you can do this on your own website or blog, as well as social platforms. Over time you will become known and people will reach out to you for your view, be it the media, podcasts, organisations or other business people.
Authenticity
Point 1 and 2 do not work if you are not being genuine or authentic. Make sure you dig deep inside and present the real, authentic you. In my experience, this creates vulnerability, people are naturally attracted to vulnerability.
Engage
When you do put yourself out there, people will always have an opinion. Sometimes good, sometimes not so much! If you engage in a dialogue with people who chose to engage with you, you are increasing your mana as an expert, you are likely getting more viral reach on the platform in which you are engaging, and who knows, you might increase your follower base considerably.
Yes
Always look for a way to say yes, even if it is outside your comfort zone. I always say yes (if I physically can) to meeting someone, speaking at an event or just lending a hand, expecting nothing in return. Interestingly some of our largest deals and most loyal customers have come from this.
Opportunities
Take opportunities when they present themselves. Some of the most impactful ones I have taken are spending a week with Sir Richard Branson on Necker Island and writing a book about SEO for Penguin Random House.
Other things like networking in the right places with the right people, being coachable and open to learning from others and defining your market size and unique value proposition are also hugely important when considering your personal brand.
