Man on the Street – Callum Sweeney
Age: 24
Occupation: Marketer at Bookabach and Influencer at Clink Clink Drink
What’s your morning routine?
I wake up, shower, do my hair and take care of my skin, get dressed, get in a good breakfast and a coffee (or two) and then head to work. Sometimes I will work on my own projects for an hour or two before I go into the office
How do you plan to get the most out of 2018?
By travelling the world and doing more things that scare me.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
Live overseas, buy a motorbike and start my own business.
What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
I would encourage myself to start small and do more with what I had at that time.
How do you think the world will change over the next 20 years?
I believe that even though technology will continue to develop faster and faster, there will be more of us that question whether these things really make our lives better. I think people will become more intentional about creating a lifestyle they love instead of accepting how it’s always been done. I think that, more than ever, it will be important for us to shape the kind of future we want to see.
How do you stay motivated?
A couple of things that I find helpful are looking back at how far I’ve come and focusing on constant improvement. That, as well as surrounding myself with super-motivated people that inspire me to do more, has really helped me in recent years.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I would probably start a bar and create a space where all of my favourite people could come and hang out. I would also like to volunteer and use my skills to help social entrepreneurs.
What is your secret to success?
Three things. Firstly, do something that you love, even if that’s not your day job, but a side hustle instead. Secondly, learn how to network well. See your contacts as people rather than just connections and aim to help them just as much as you hope they’ll help you. Finally, I think that it helps to always have the end goal in mind. When it gets hard, just remember what you’re working towards and why you started in the first place.
What’s the best bit of advice or quote that resonates with you?
When a good opportunity comes your way, say yes first and figure out how to do it later. Basically, fake it till you make it.
What are your favourite restaurants to frequent?
I love Coco’s Cantina on K Road. There’s no better combo than happy hour pasta and $7 prosecco. I also really enjoy Ortolana in Britomart and Kiss Kiss in Mt Eden.
What is your secret to living a longer, more satisfying life?
Surround yourself with good people and don’t worry about the things you can’t control.
What makes you feel alive?
Freezing cold swims at Piha beach.
