Man On The Street – Jonathan Potton
Age: 27
Occupation: Managing Director/Video Producer
What’s your morning routine?
It tends to vary, as different video shoot projects mean that wake-up times can be all over the place. If it’s a more standard morning, I like to keep things easy – shower, good breakfast, make lunch, and a kiss on the cheek from my partner.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
I don’t really like the idea of bucket lists. For me, I’m very much in the moment, and enjoy focusing on where I’m at right now.
What advice would you give your 20 year-old self?
I’d say, “Be patient and relax.” I think when you’re that age, you’re just so eager for things to ‘happen’ and take on the world that you miss opportunities and don’t enjoy things as much when you’re in them.
How do you stay motivated?
Staying connected to my one true passion, which is film and filmmaking. I’m really lucky in that I work in an environment where this is the 24/7 focus.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
Exactly what I’m doing now. Money was never the motivator – I just love being a part of the industry and doing good work.
What is your secret to success?
I have three things: The first is never give up; the second is always keep an eye out for an opportunity – you never know where something might lead; and the third is to work really, really hard.
What is the best bit of advice, or quote, that resonates with you?
Years ago. I worked a part time job over the summer during high school and one time at lunch I had a ‘life’ conversation with my manager. He was curious about what I wanted to do. His advice was to “find your passion” – once you’ve got that, you’re sorted. The conversation really stuck with me.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
I think Al Brown is a genius and love anything that he’s got his finger prints on. The Fed has a special place in my heart – those blueberry buttermilk pancakes are magical! My partner and I also eat often at Mr Zhou’s Dumplings.
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
Well I haven’t been around for too long … However, I do feel that the most ‘successful’ people I’ve met are those that have found their own voice and have a clear idea of who they are.
What makes you feel alive?
High-pressure situations – there’s nothing like taking on a big challenge and pulling it off.
