Man On The Street – Jordon Milroy
Age: 28
Occupation: Visionary and climber at Jordon’s Climb for Awareness
What’s your morning routine?
The alarm is set for 5.03am. I roll into the gym and do a full workout until 6.45 and then back home, where it’s coffee time!
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
To find a bucket… just joking! Probably my first is to try to get into the 2024 Paralympic games in Paris for yachting. Secondly, developing a program to help people get an idea about disability. And, finally, just to be me and be a decent human.
What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
Put down the shot glass. I think I would tell myself that my dreams are not too big and that people would always judge you not matter what you do, so climb another tower, sing in public and smile at strangers. If all else fails, then listen to your mother and just be yourself.
How do you stay motivated?
I have cerebral palsy. It’s really easy to just sit around feeling sorry for myself. But it’s equally easy (and rewarding) if you have a goal to strive towards. Everything really motivates me, as I see everything as an obstacle, and a goal too.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
What I’m doing now: just living life, having a great yarn and smiling.
What is your secret to success?
Success is different to everyone. I don’t see myself as a successful guy. I’m on a journey, where I may win some or I may want to forget some. So, I reckon, just try your best and enjoy what you do.
What’s the best bit of advice or quote that resonates with you?
“Can’t isn’t a word!” – another one of mum’s gems. I actually looked up the word ‘can’t’ and it is a real word! But I think it’s the principle that counts, right?
What are your favourite restaurants to frequent?
Pancakes. There, I said it! I love everything French, so I’m on the hunt for anywhere that sells the best pancakes and great coffee so I can sit there for hours trying to solve the world’s problems like a real Frenchman. But I’m a Samoan and I drink coffee through a straw, so that’s not really romantic.
What is your secret to living a longer, more satisfying, life?
I’m 28… check back with me when I’m 80… But I would say, do what you love, surround yourself with supportive people and just live a little.
What makes you feel alive?
Breathing… And, I think, my small impact that I have on people. The ability to talk to strangers and express myself in my unique way gives me the edge and therefore I stay feeling alive.
