Man On The Street – Justin Haiu
Age: 37
Occupation: Entertainer/Theatre Practitioner
What’s your morning routine?
The alarm goes off, I take a moment to be inspired by the world, then I think about the day ahead. I sneak out of the room (as not to wake my wife and baby daughter), I get my son up and get him ready for school, I grab a coffee and breakfast, kisses goodbye to wifey and bubee, and I’m out the door.
What’s the top three things on your bucket list?
First of all, I don’t have a bucket list… but good to consider. I’d check out the creativity & funk of NYC – I think jazz, hip hop and creative vibes! Visit Israel and increase my knowledge and understanding of Biblical history… walking the land and being amongst the culture. Taking a motorbike ride or campervan trip round the South Island with family and friends.
What advice would you give your younger self?
To seek understanding – of self, of others, of my culture and my identity. And to know that I am of value and worth.
What is the secret to success?
I believe it’s everybody working to their strengths – together. I might be able do everything but not as good as someone else who came alongside me. I can’t ever neglect the valuable things that ground me too – faith and community.
What’s your favorite restaurant?
I don’t have a favourite place, but I do like a fancy treat out to a nice place with the wifey or family and enjoy trying more Asian fusion dishes.
What is the secret of living a longer, more successful life?
At this point in my life I think it’s a mix of doing what you love to do and what you’re good at and that it’s got a focus on others – or basically off self. I also value identifying sneaky fears and replacing them with truths.
What makes you feel alive?
Greatness. Creating great shows that create great atmospheres, that then inspire the ‘great’ in people.
