NZ Isn’t Prepared for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, But You Can Be
There are just over 5.123 million people in New Zealand. In the next few days we will be co-hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside Australia. FIFA estimates that there will be 2 billion people watching the tournament. If my maths is right, and it could well be wrong knowing me, then there will be 390 times more people watching New Zealand than there are people IN New Zealand. We’re hosting something absolutely massive, and it’s the first time the Southern Hemisphere has had the honour of hosting the event. Across the country we expect to host 29 events total. Tickets range from anywhere from $10 to $20 so the barrier to entry is practically non-existent.
“I’d just encourage people to go out today and purchase a ticket.” Eden Park’s Chief Executive Nick Sautner says. “Be part of history… Be part of this magnificent event.”
Everything kicks off July 20th and the opening match will be between NZ and Norway at Eden Park. It’s going to be epic.
Here’s how things are looking at the moment:
The initial Group matches range across Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton from July 20th till 2nd of August. Round Sixteen, quarter finals and Semi Finals will occur in Wellington and Auckland between the 5th and 15th of August. Unfortunately to catch the 3rd place and finals you’re going to have to travel to Brisbane and Sydney respectively.
There’s a number of ways to enjoy the action, whether you’re getting in amongst it with the crowd or getting private boxes. If you’re in the club rooms then you probably don’t need to be reading this cause you’re already fully plugged in. If you want to go all in you can get everything from tickets for every game at your home field, or follow the team around the country as they rack up the wins. You can find various package deals here.
For the homebodies that are going to be hosting from home you can catch the games on Sky Sports here.
No matter how you catch the games, this is an awesome opportunity for New Zealand on the world stage. We already dominate rugby and America’s Cup, it’s time we bring home another trophy for the country. Go Football Ferns! Good luck!
