What are the top three things on your bucket list?
Mountain bike the Old Ghost Road, in the South Island.
Explore South America.
Heli-Skiing in Alaska.
What advice would you give your 20 year-old self?
I’m not sure I’d do much differently – “make the most of that stage of your life, it’s one of the few times that you can act purely for your own interest.”
How do you stay motivated?
I’ve always set high standards for myself and achieving them has never failed to motivate me. My wife’s the same and we push each other along in that regard.
If you didn’t need money, what would you do?
I’d play more sport, spend more time with my family and quickly find myself with a need to fill the gap left by work. I’d probably become one of those parents that coaches and runs the local football club, is on the school committee/board, and generally enjoys winding up other parents who have far less time on their hands.
What is the secret to success?
Be yourself.
What is the worst mistake you’ve made and how did you fix it?
Not making my ambition known at high school. That experience taught me to not be shy of asking for what I want, and to make it clear what I am trying to achieve.
What is your advice for people to fund their dream?
Surround yourself with people who care for you and can call it like it is, as you strive to make things happen.
What is the best bit of advice, or quote, that resonates with you?
“Respect the rules, but fight for better ones”. Mario Schlosser, CEO, Oscar Health.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
The Engine Room, Northcote Point.
How do you keep up to date with current affairs?
I read, watch, and listen, as much as time allows. The Economist Radio podcasts are my latest fad as they provide a brilliant global perspective on a wide range of topics.
