Super Cars: One is Never Enough
Photography by Jake Hoare
Supercars are fantastic incredible machines, but what if you can’t choose? Various manufacturers have subscription services. Choose a car from their brand stable based on your mood. This works great if you only want to drive one maker. But what if you want to try them all? A new model has sprung up – the collective subscription model across many high-end assets. Think timeshare, for cars.
New Zealand’s MotorShare brings this to the supercar world, and M2 was fortunate to experience their service. Sign up and download their slick app. Flick through many cars to find your desired ride. Book it for a day or weekend with a click, and you’re set. License checks happen in the background but it’s easy, Chris and the team lead you through if required. The Auckland crew preps your chosen vehicle – cleaning, servicing, fueling, maintaining it to perfection. Then, drive your dream car for your booking period before returning it (refilled).
I did exactly this. An experiential writer, I wanted to experience the full process. I downloaded said app, selected the McLaren 650S, and picked it up days later. Easy – That car was mine! I took it on hundreds of kilometers of windy roads over the next couple days while marveling at its exceptional performance – review to come.
Major draws of this model:
- You needn’t tie up capital in an occasionally-used car. Simply pay the monthly fee for access when wanted. Use your days or save them for a longer booking.
- All the admin of owning these cars is taken care of: Maintenance, servicing, insurance, you name it.
- It’s not just one car, but an expanding fleet.
- As more people join, more cars enter the collective.
- Great if you can’t choose or want the right car for the right occasion.
- Brilliant if you are dipping your towe in and want to try many cars ahead of committing to one.
