The Champagne Campaign: the new Mumm Grand Cordon
Be it sprayed on the podium after an F1 race, raised as a toast at a gathering of colleagues and associates, or popped open for a special occasion, champagne is a prerequisite for any celebration. Hailing from a long line of German barons and knights going back to the 12th century, the Mumm family founded the champagne house bearing its name in 1827. Today, the Mumm vineyards are comprised of around 200 hectares, 160 of which are classed as “Grand Cru”.
Although the champagne house was founded by brothers, Jacobus, Gottlieb, and Phillip Mumm, it was George Herman Mumm (the namesake of G.H. Mumm & Co.) who popularised the brand, and in 1876, he created the Cordon Rouge, known for its iconic red ribbon, which he dedicated to the feats of exceptional men and women. In 1904, famed French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot and his crew celebrated the crossing of the Antarctic with a bottle of the Cordon Rouge.
It’s a champagne with a rich history and synonymous with success and Champagne Mumm introduces a refreshing contemporary take on the Cordon Rouge’s iconic red ribbon with the release of the Mumm Grand Cordon.
The iconic red sash associated with Champagne Mumm and the Cordon Rouge has been given a remixed, modern feel. The red ribbon is the star of the show, indented into the glass itself and standing bold at the forefront. The ornate gold G.H. Mumm signature and eagle emblem accompany the sash on the Grand Cordon’s clean, sleek labelless bottle.
The task of balancing a brand’s rich heritage with a new, contemporary look requires tact and meticulousness, and Champagne Mumm enlisted the design experience of award-winning Welsh designer Ross Lovegrove to bring the rich 189 year history of the red ribbon into the twenty-first century.
Form follows function and the Grand Cordon’s bottle isn’t just for show; the long, slender neck is designed to accentuate the inviting apricot and creamy aromas of the Cordon Rouge cuvee.
“Lovegrove worked in collaboration with our Cellar Master to identify how the design of the bottle could add value to accompany the Champagne’s aromas. Our ambition was to continue to revolutionize the traditional design of the Champagne’s bottle,” says Champagne Mumm Ambassador, Mathilde Laborde.
Champagne Mumm’s Grand Cordon is not just a cuvee of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, it’s also a cuvee of rich history and a desire to innovate. Here’s a toast to an old friend sporting a brand new look.
