The Gorge, Counter Programming the Valentines Movie
Two trained snipers are separately given the assignment of guarding a remote ravine (some might say gorge! But not me. I’m not here to uphold any brand guidelines.)
Miles Teller and Any Taylor-Joy are set across from each other for a one year cycle, maintaining auto turrets and living their lives. They’re under strict instructions not to communicate with each other. But you know how it goes when a pair of hot snipers both have binoculars.
The question is, what does the ravine hold? Why is it always full of mist, and what happens when they find out what’s actually down there? That’s a question the trailer is itching to spoil but once again, I’m not here to tow any official lines.
The film’s directed by Scott Derrickson who has a pedigree in horror having directed and written The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the two Black Phone movies, as well as getting a slice of the Marvel action when he directed the first Doctor Strange.
Discussing the film Anya and Miles agreed that the film has a bit of every genre in it, and perhaps enough of an orthodox love story to trick your partner into watching it with you before finding out it’s an action flick.
“I think it’s got something for everybody.” Anya Taylor-Joy told Screen Rant. “I think whatever floats your boat, we probably have it in this movie.”
“Well, I just think it’s good alternative programming, as well, to your typical love story, and they meet each other for the first time, and you’re going to watch ’em fall in love.” agreed Teller “But they have to go through some really entertaining, engaging, high-octane, hellacious s–t to end up with each other, so that’s cool.”
Releasing the movie directly on Valentines day too, I’m sure that’s not going to cause any grief.
Counter programming Valentines
Attempts are constantly made at hooking couples in on Valentines day. There’s always the usual glut of standard romantic comedies that can hardly do either, let alone both.
Then there’s the tongue in cheek options, hoping to lure the lads to the movies with enough of a hat tip toward the girls to make them put up with it. Then there’s the down and out films fighting the tide, perfect for the discerning couple. Here are some of the most unexpected films ever released on Valentine’s Day.
1991 – Silence of the Lambs
Nothing says I love you than a gift basket of skin lotion. Just be sure to put it back once you’re done.
1992 – Wayne’s World
Perhaps one of the most fun loving films to drop on Valentine’s Day, and one of the only movies brave enough to say it like it is about Claudia Schiffer. Shaaawing.
2016 – Deadpool
Deadpool did a massive marketing campaign making out that it was a cute valentines movie to see with your special someone. It wasn’t. This tongue in cheek romance angle was played up again with the most recent Deadpool and Wolverine posters. Once again it wasn’t a Valentines appropriate film, but mostly because it released in July.
