The Latest iMac Gets A Splash Of Colour
As winter slowly creeps up on us and the cold, grey afternoons begin to become the norm, I think we could all use an injection of colour in our lives. Luckily, the folks at Apple have come through at just the right time with a redesign of one of their staple products, the iMac computer. It’s the first redesign for the iconic computer in almost a decade and after debuting the new range as part of their Spring Loaded launch event, the details revealed by Apple suggest this latest iMac is a fairly significant evolution from the model of the past.
The main technical feature worth noting is the employment of Apple’s M1 silicon chip. The M1 chip is Apple bringing microprocessor development in-house, becoming the first PC maker to develop and employ its own micro-processing chips and moving away from its longtime partnership with previous developer, Intel. Apple first shifted to using its homegrown silicon in its updated MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini models in late 2020 and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with praise for the significant improvements in speed, efficiency and battery life so expectations will be high for the processing capabilities of the new iMac.
Elsewhere, one very timely feature of the new model is an improved microphone and 1080p front camera, specifically designed to improve the video calling experience, which has vaulted up the priority list for consumers in the post COVID world. Also, the traditional headphone jack has shockingly survived another generation of iMac, despite being replaced in many new Apple releases in the past few years (a huge win for those of us still using $15 bargain bin earphones).
Aesthetically, the new range looks like it’s been on quite an impressive diet. The line features slimmed borders at a width of just 11.5mm and a 2.5-inch increase in display from the previous model, from 21.5 inches to 24. And of course, the new line has gone back to providing chromatic colour options for the first time the 00’s, offering a number of colours including green, blue and pink, as well as the iconic silver if you’re more of a traditionalist.
The upgrades come at a cost, with the new line set to be released in May at a base price of $1,899AUD. But with the enhance processing power, the efficient and stylish redesign and improvements in video calling, it’s going to be hard to resist picking one of these up. Just make sure you’re well-groomed for those work zoom calls; you’re going to be in HD!
