The Legacy of Yalumba’s The Signature
It would have been quite a sight, a British migrant Samuel Smith, planting vines under the moonlight 175 years ago but it was that moment that set root for one of the world’s most iconic wine brands and one that is still family-owned six generations on.
Derived from the indigenous Australian word meaning “all the land around,” the name Yalumba is a fitting nod to the deep connection between the winery and its terroir. And while things have grown from a modest 30-acre parcel of land to a brand with a global footprint it still has a strong connection to its humble roots plus that slightly rebellious, pioneering DNA that was evident with that first moonlit breaking of dirt.
But among its many contributions to the wine world, Yalumba The Signature stands out as a particularly important testament to this celebration of the pioneering spirit and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Plus a celebration of the human side of the business and the often unsung heroes behind the scenes.
Every vintage of Yalumba The Signature is dedicated to a person who has made a significant contribution to the life and culture of the winery. This tradition of honouring individuals began with the 1962 vintage and has continued ever since, with each bottle becoming a personal token of appreciation, and another chapter of Yalumba’s history. From viticulturists to family members, each honoree is immortalised in the wine’s legacy.
Figures like Kevin Glastonbury and Robin Nettelbeck in 2019, and Nick Waterman in 2018, have been immortalised alongside each vintage they are associated with.
And this just isn’t about setting aside a few bottles and putting some signatures on them. The crafting of The Signature is a serious and meticulous process. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes are carefully selected for just the right balance before going into a winemaking process that has been honed over decades involving a combination of traditional techniques and modern technology, all aimed at expressing the unique characteristics of each vintage.
While of course, every season has its nuances, tasting notes for Yalumba The Signature typically praise its rich and complex profile, dark fruits like blackberry and plum along with subtle notes of spice, chocolate, and oak. A result of that wonderful balance between the boldness of Shiraz and the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon which offers up a structured yet smooth finish with well-integrated tannins.
The 2021 Signature is being released this April and features another Yalumba hero, Packaging Development Manager, Chris Gerhardy who has been with Yalumba since 1972. Not only will this Signature release pay homage to his 52 years of service but also a nod to the idea that great things take time.
