The Magnificent Unknown
In 1847 Samuel Smith boarded a ship from England and made off to the new world. Like so many others like him to embrace the magnificient unknown and make a new life for himself. Personally I wonder what choice he would have made if he had known of New Zealand’s wine country, but no matter, he set up shop in Australia.
Two years after he left England he planted his first vines in the aptly named Eden Valley, in so doing creating Yalumba, which has been going strong ever since, releasing award winning wines year after year. They’ve been around for quite a few!
Yalumba goes out of it’s way to make unique expressions with individual character. This mission has given them a wide variety of wines to choose from, each a winner in it’s own right. Pushing the boundaries has meant constant experimentation which continues to pay off, setting them at the head of the game.
If you were looking to have a whirlwind tour of their greats we recommend dipping into their Samuels Collection, a best of the best collection celebrating their founder. In particular we can recommend the Barossa Shiraz Cabernet and the Eden Valley Viognie.
Previous vintages of the Viognier in have won a gold in the Royal Adelaide Wine Show for being a well crafted classic, full of flavour and character, but finishing with freshness.
Or, rather than taking our recommendation, go forth in the pioneers spirit and try a little of the magnificient unknown.
