The Prada Spacesuit
When astronauts suit up for NASA’s Artemis III mission to the Moon, they won’t just be wearing gear built to survive the harshest environment known to man—they also be rocking some high-end Prada threads. The Italian luxury brand teamed up with Axiom Space to create the AxEMU spacesuit, which combines cutting-edge tech with sleek, designer flair.
This unexpected collaboration was unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, no less—fitting, right? There, Axiom and Prada showed off the AxEMU suit, which promises to redefine spacewear.
This suit isn’t just about looking good. It’s a serious piece of technology. We’re talking about a high-performance outer layer designed to withstand the Moon’s crazy temperature swings and that ever-annoying lunar dust. Prada didn’t just lend its logo here; they worked on advanced materials, stitching techniques, and design elements that go way beyond the average handbag.
The AxEMU is also built for action, allowing astronauts to perform spacewalks lasting up to eight hours. That means everything from advanced helmet coatings to high-tech cooling systems has been meticulously designed. And the best part? The suit fits a wide range of body types—from the first percentile to the 99th. That’s Prada’s way of saying, “We make lunar couture for everyone.”
Before astronauts take the AxEMU for a spin on the Moon, the suit has to pass some serious tests. The AxEMU has already passed pressurised simulations, and it’ll soon undergo more extreme tests, like underwater missions and reduced-gravity exercises.
By 2025, the spacesuit will enter the critical design review phase—a make-or-break moment in the space industry (and the closest thing NASA has to a “Project Runway” finale) and then it might just be one small step for man” and “one giant leap for high-performance tailoring.
