The Worlds Fastest Drive-Thru
The world’s first drive-thru opened in 1947 at Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri. The concept revolutionized fast food and takeaways. In 71 years, the concept hasn’t really changed much. Drive up to a microphone and give your order. Drive up to another window and pay. Drive on a little bit further to another window and pickup said order. Simple and straight forward. Nothing much needs to change right? Well tell that to Jaguar. In celebration of their latest F-TYPE they decided to reinvent the process.
The Sugar Club at the top of the Sky Tower is known primarily for a couple of things: 1, being a restaurant at the top of the Sky Tower and 2, it’s fine five-star food. It is certainly not regarded for its fast food factor, nor it’s drive-thru convenience. So the clever bods at jaguar decided to do something about this while incorporating a test drive with fast food in the form of the Jaguar F-TYPE Fastest Food experience.
This involved getting a Jaguar F-Type P300 delivered to M2 HQ just in time for a kick drive before heading to the base of the Sky Tower to pick up a meal from Sugar Club without even leaving the vehicle. You see in order to evoke the performance of the F-Type, they decided to have our food delivered to a specially made drive-thru booth via an 11-second Skyjump down the side of the Sky Tower. Admittedly, this could be seen as a bit of an ordeal for the serving staff if it was on a regular basis but it did make for a particularly novel lunch run. With our Sugar Club takeaways passed through the window we headed quickly back to the office to tend to a queue of fellow staffers keen for a ride.
Unfortunately this display of altruism did mean that the lunch had cooled slightly by the time we got to it but it was still many times better than your average drive-thru fare.
Of course the other very important element of this particular drive-thru experience is the F-TYPE. Amazingly, underneath the aggressively attractive exterior (if that’s a thing?) of the P300 is a 2L four-cylinder engine. I actually didn’t know this at the time of the drive and could have sworn it had 2 extra cylinders. You see, whatever black magic they have done to this efficient powerhouse (7.2L/100km/h) it pumps out 221kW and an exhaust burble that will make the hairs on the back of your neck dance.
The combination of this powerhouse with a lightweight body, torque vectoring system and an 8-speed quickshift gearbox gives you 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and top speed of 249 km/h sort of performance which is kind of the old school metric, but the real metric for performance was the squeal of my work colleague as we entered the North Western motorway. Based on this metric I would give the F-TYPE a Rolling Stones at Western Springs dB rating.
