World-Class Wine For Your International Cinema
Lights! Camera! Action! Sip!
The Whānau Mārama NZ International Film Festival is back and so is Spy Valley as official wine sponsor for another season of our favourite celebration of high-quality international cinema. Spy Valley are the natural pick as sponsors for this epic national event celebrating global art and culture as they’ve always had a thing about the movies – even going as far as getting the late great Roger Moore in his iconic cinematic role as James Bond, to sign a handful of Spy Valley 007 vintage magnums.
But, the main reason Spy Valley are sponsoring the Whānau Mārama NZ International Film Festival is because they absolutely love both wine and film. So much so that they’ve even had a bit of fun matching their wines with festival films! Here’s a couple to whet your whistle:
Past Lives
Korean-Canadian director Celine Song makes an impressive debut with her beautiful tale of past and future desires in an exploration of identity, expectation, and what could’ve been. A simple yet powerful love story, exceptional performances by the actors and an intense emotional journey fills your heart to the brim. Tim Wong described Past Lives as; ‘pitch-perfect in aching certainty, (that) will have you gasping for air – and tissues, too.’
Try matching this delightfully sweet cinematic tale with:
Spy Valley 2021 Rosé
With an aroma of vibrant sweet berry fruits with floral notes and a long dry finish this is the perfect accompaniment to any tasty creative production. Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas awarded the 2021 Spy Valley Rosé 92 points and described it as; ‘youthful and fragrant. Flavours of strawberries and red apple, some fresh red melon and roses touch the palate first followed by textures satin and crispness from a core of fruit and youthful acid line. Balanced, well made and ready to drink.’
The Delinquents
Three and a half years in prison for a bank robbery is totally worth it so long as you get to escape the drudgery of your white collar job. In this delightful subversion of the crime genre, New Argentine Cinema director Rodrigo Moreno delivers a completely fresh take on the caper movie where ‘getting away with it’ is never really part of the masterplan for two of the most unlikely criminals of all time. Adrian Hatwell described The Delinquents as; ‘a laconic ramble through a beautifully realised world under Moreno’s assured direction.’
Try matching this meaty cinematic drama with:
2016 Envoy Outpost Vineyard Pinot Noir
Featuring a tantalising aroma of plum, five-spice, and truffles this is a pinot that’s fresh and vibrant on the palate with an elegant structure and fine rounded tannins. Kiwi legend and master of wine Bob Campbell certainly appreciated this Envoy by offering 93 points and describing it as; ‘mellow, moderately concentrated pinot noir with red fruits, spice, anise, plum, spicy oak and bacon fat flavours. Still reasonably fresh with emerging savoury bottle development. Well-structured with a backbone of fine, ripe tannins.’
International cinema and world-class wine – a match made in heaven! Try them out for yourselves at the next Whānau Mārama NZ International Film Festival screening. Check here for all the films playing in your region and here for Spy Valley’s finest vintages.
