The New All Blacks Jersey is All About Performance
Just in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Adidas has revealed its brand new jersey for our lads to wear while pummeling every other country into the ground. The new design comes care of Y-3, a collaboration label between Adidas and the legendary designer Yohji Yamamoto.
I don’t know what the analogue for carbon fibre on clothing is, but the shirts provide an unparalleled fit, strength and speed, and is 25 percent lighter than previous designs. The logos have shifted a little, but the RWC trophy is still embossed on the right sleeve to remind any opponents they’re scrumming with that we’ve won the World Cup in 1987, 2011, and 2015.
“We wanted to create a jersey that brought together the Japanese and Maori cultures.” says Yamamoto “The design bears hand-drawn koru and fern motifs in a celebration of Maori culture. It has been a privilege to work on such a major project and I wish the team the best of luck in the tournament.”
New Zealand Rugby’s Maori Advisor, Luke Crawford, who gave Adidas advice on Maori design, said: “The fern design represents the legacy of those players who have worn the jersey in the past, while the unfurling koru represents the younger players coming through – the All Blacks of the future. I think Y-3 have really captured the mauri of what the All Blacks jersey stands for and how it represents us, and created a truly beautiful garment.”
It doesn’t just stop at the player jersey. A training range has been fully developed including a performance tee, performance singlet, polo shirt and hoodie.
You don’t need to be found by a selector to pick up your own shirt. The RWC high-performance jersey is available for $200 from Adidas while replica shirts go for $150 for adults.
Keep an eye out for the boys wearing the new jersey for the first time against South Africa on 21st of September.
