Bulgari just set it’s ninth world record for the thinnest mechanical watch ever produced. The title holder is the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC, coming in at just 1.7 millimetres. For context the forgotten 10 cent coin rattling around in your wallet is 1.58mm thick. It also takes the record as the world’s thinnest COSC chronometer.
Bulgari have been locked in a race with Piaget, Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet for years now trying to hold onto this title. The last record holder was Richard Mille’s RM UP-01 Ferrari, which is .05mm thicker than Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo. There isn’t too much further these brands could push the boundaries without giving us leaflets of rice paper with the time on them. Bulgari’s last effort in 2022 was the Octo Finissimo Ultra coming in at 1.8mm.
Both the strap and case are made of titanium housing a tungsten carbide mainplate. Inside are 170 components, a few of which are on display on the openwork dial. It’s BVL180 movement has passed the official chronometer tests of COSC, meaning it’s not just for show. This thing can officially keep the time!
Bulgari started their weight loss regime in 2014 with the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, which landed the record for thinnest tourbillon movement, coming in at 1.95mm.
