Predator Fans Should Watch War Machine
The weather’s crap, you’ve just lit a fire and you’re looking for some dumbish yet action-filled entertainment to while away the evening on Netflix?
Boy, have I got a recommendation for you! Especially if you loved the Arnie peak of Predator and/or the proper (ie non-Tom Cruise) version of Reacher. War Machine is exactly what you’re looking for – and then some.
Everyone’s favourite Arnie substitute Alan Ritchson is ‘81’ a haunted super soldier training to be an Army Ranger to fulfill a promise to his lost brother. After an extended section of hardcore training, breathtaking in its intensity, 81 and his similarly-numeralled mates are given one final test before they can be given their coveted Ranger badges. A cross country orientation of some gnarly Colorado terrain, but they need to be on alert – as Master Sergeant Dennis Quaid warns significantly – there will be ‘booby traps’.
Alas, these booby traps are the least of the Ranger wannabes’ troubles as an – absolutely awesome! – massive alien robot is awoken from its electric dream-filled slumber by some gratuitous explosions. This monster is a genuine rival to RoboCop’s ED-209 or Arnie’s original Terminator for iconic badassedness. Expect a forthcoming meme-a-thon starring this supreme creation.
Cue a Predator-like picking off of Ranger greenhorns one-by-one via unflinching destruction until only 81 stands between the MegaBot and a seemingly complete alien colonisation of Colorado. As Arnie grimly discovered back in Predator, terrestrial weapons are no use against superior alien beings, thus 81 must get creative if he wants to survive his ordeal.
Already a sensation on Netflix, War Machine debuted at #1 globally and is destined to become a SciFi war/action classic. Ritchson is so perfect in his role of troubled jingoistic warrior I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him take over the leadership of the Republican Party once Trump is finally done. Rated R for some pretty grisly violence at times, this is not for the squeamish. For hardcore action fans only.
