The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
In Cinemas 21 Apr
Nicholas knocked it out of the park in 2021 with Pig, wiping the slate clean of all his oddball performances with something truly oscar worthy. Too bad it’s being immediately followed up by a meta-story about how he’s a gigantic meme.
Cage plays an over the top version of himself who’s well in debt to the hotel he’s spent the last six months at waiting for his next big break. While his next big role might be nowhere in sight, an uber fan and crime boss Javi (played with comedic aplomb by Pedro Pascal) offers to pay him a million dollars to hang out with him during his birthday. Drugs, guns, a CIA plot, lots of hysterical screaming ensues. If you’re looking for a laugh or an excuse to see Nicholas Cage do absolutely anything on-screen, then this movie is for you. His draw is that he puts everything he has into every single role he takes, no matter whether it’s a B-grade straight to streaming piece of trash, Oscar Bait, or a meta-comedy about himself.
But how does it feel playing yourself in a movie? Cage answers, “[‘Nick Cage’] is an invented version of Nic Cage. The character is feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood. It’s not me. I’m feeling pretty good about things.”
He’s also said that he was told to play the crazy version of himself because that’s who everybody loves, and not what he’s actually like off camera.
If you were wondering, no, Nicholas Cage is adamant he will never watch this movie.
Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre
On Netflix 17 Mar
Guy Ritchie must be in a bit of a groove recently bringing Hugh Grant along for the ride to play the same cocky archetype over and over. This latest flick pits Hugh as the billionaire villain going up against super spy Jason Statham and his oddball crew, including Aubrey Plaza. The Spy team needs to also handle a Hollywood actor who’s way out of their depth. Hijinks ensues and massive personalities need to be kept in check for the plan to succeed.
Morbius
In Cinemas 31 Mar
Produced by Sony and set in the same universe as Venom, Morbius brings to life another Spiderman villain who sits somewhere between hero and villain. Jared Leto fills the role perfectly as a bat-man, otherwise known as a down and out vampire, complete with the urge to drink blood. Delayed seven times already, people have been waiting for this one for a while.
Who can’t relate to a billionaire playboy orphan who gets off on wearing tight leather and beating the crap out of the lower class consequence free?
