On the 6th May, The Cloud was bustling with hair and fashion industry leaders for the biggest hair event in New Zealand, The Collective. An interactive two-day event of creative workshops with international and national artists, attendees were doused in a plethora of inspiration and an unparalleled opportunity to learn techniques from global artists.
Following a day of education, The Fashion Hair Awards was hosted on the night brought to you by L’Oréal Professionnel. The best and budding stylists were placed in the limelight, alongside Kiwi fashion designers the likes of Wynn Hamlyn, Zambesi and Knuefermann.
The event showcased hair artistry in five categories; Salon of the Year, Hair Stylist of the Year, Editorial Award, Men’s Image Award and Young Talent award. In this issue of M2, we chatted to Nicky Crombie from Vivo in Bethlehem, Tauranga, who took home the Men’s Image Award.
How does it feel to be a finalist/winner?
Incredible. I’ve never had a feeling like this and I can’t stop thinking back to the moment they said my name on that stage! It just completely opened my eyes to what can be achieved in the hairdressing industry if you really put your mind to it!
What is the secret to your success?
I think that having great friends and family around you and positive people to encourage you, and having an amazing team at work helps to keep you focused to achieve your goals.
How would you define the look of the moment?
Futuristic… Modern Star Trek! Haha! I see a lot of metallic colours on commercial shapes. Edgy, but wearable… An awesome fade can look amazing in any colour!
Top tips and tricks for the hopeless?
The main thing I’ve found, is when you have an idea, and you’re are set on doing that idea, stop looking! So many times I’ve had this idea then try and put 10 different things into it and I get lost. This time I stuck to my original idea and look where I ended up!!
Where to from now?
More competitions!! I want to enter everything I can now. Now that I know what it feels like to be up on that stage with everyone looking at you, hearing your name and looking at your work, there is nothing I want more than to do that all over again.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
‘If you fall, just get back up. Nobody gonna see you on the ground!!’ And of course just ‘Give it All or Nothing’ – the way I like to live my life.
