60 Years Of Grand Seiko – Celebrating A Revolution
The number ‘60’ is an important one within the world of horology as it signifies the completion of a revolution of course. In Japan, it also has wider cultural significance. When someone turns 60, they have gone full circle through the traditional zodiac calendar cycle and has arrived back at the beginning. It is considered a time of new energy and re-birth. So for Grand Seiko, their 60th anniversary is important for not only the connection to culture and watchmaking but it is also an opportunity to reflect on their history while setting a course for the future.
It is also of course a time for celebration and here in New Zealand, Grand Seiko partnered with Partridge Jewellers and joined special guests at Tommy’s Champagne Parlour in Britomart to mark 60 years of the Grand Seiko, the original master timepiece that set a template of elite precision, legibility, durability and personal useability that has defined Grand Seiko ever since. The auspicious occasion was celebrated in the appropriate manner with a group of true watch enthusiasts on hand to raise their glasses to Grand Seiko’s magnificent achievement.
Yukiaki Suganuma, the managing director of Grand Seiko Australia notes the importance of the link between Grand Seiko and its New Zealand customers; “We were very happy to see the great appreciation for Grand Seiko craftsmanship from New Zealand customers and we hope this support will continue to grow as we begin the next 60 years of our history.” That next sixty years started with four new watches also being unveiled on the night.
All of the new Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary Edition Pieces feature dials in the signature blue yet each one highlighting a different aspect of the wide range of expertise and craftsmanship that personifies the famous Grand Seiko today. What they all share however is Grand Seiko’s legendary craftsmanship and dedication to the Japanese sense of time and respect for the natural world. A concept best expressed through the Takumi – or artisans – understanding of the nature of time; that every fleeting moment is a unique expression. Always in motion, graceful, ever-changing and grand. Something truly expressed in their marvelous new range of 60th Anniversary Grand Seiko watches.
