Grand Seiko Takes On Sport With The Evolution 9 Collection
Using Grand Seiko’s touchstones dating back to 1967, the new Evolution 9 Collection represents the future of watchmaking. The collection has expanded to accommodate five new Spring Drive sport watches. All together, it’s an equal split between featuring a GMT calibre and GMT chronographs, with the odd one out being a 200m diver’s watch.
Their cases and bracelets are made of high-intensity titanium and the dials and indexes are coated with Lumibrite for night legibility. Crown guards rising up on the right hand side protect the crown from snagging on your sleeve, making this carefully crafted pieces well suited to an active lifestyle.
The first of the two chronographs features a blue dial and is adjusted to achieve a enhanced accuracy rate of ±10 seconds per month in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph. In addition to the 12-hour chronograph, the watch also features a rotating bezel and a GMT hand to enable it to display a third time zone.
Refinements have been made over past entries in the series. The lugs are wider and the bracelets are more robust and, like the cases, have a low centre of gravity to ensure that the watches sit comfortably and securely on the wrist. Legibility has been cranked up to 12 with new bolder clearly differentiated hands. The numbers running along the bezel have also had facelift with a new font developed specially for the Evolution 9 collection.
Grand Seiko has an overwhelming commitment to “the nature of time”. One example of this statement becoming a reality is how the Spring Drive mirrors the continuous, silent and smooth passage of time; time doesn’t tick, it flows.
The diver’s watch has a richly textured dark surface inspired by the currents of the Kuroshio Current, otherwise known as the Black Stream. Powered by the Spring Drive Calibre 9RA5, it offers an accuracy rate of ±10 seconds per month and a five day power reserve.
The Limited Edition Grand Seiko Chronograph 15th Anniversary SBGC249 is limited to 700 pieces worldwide and will be available in July/August along with SBGC251.
The diver’s watch SLGA015 (Spring Drive 5 Days Calibre 9RA5) is available in August alongside the SBGE283 and SBGE285.
