M2 Luxury Watch Guide 2021: G-SHOCK
G-Shock GMW-B5000PB-6D
Paying tribute to one of the world’s most beautiful cities, the G-SHOCK GMW-B5000PB-6D upholds the G-SHOCK’s reputation for delivering tough and durable watches without discounting the importance of some artistic flair. Getting back to its roots with the squared case and bezel which was adopted by G-SHOCK’s first-born creation back in 1983, the GMW-B5000PB-6D brings that original style and gives it a modern rebrush, opting for a far more ambitious aesthetic effect. The soft, pastel-like purple case and bezel is complimented beautifully by components of dark blue. The two-tone formula carries over to the strap, as ion plated purple and blue shades cover the individually coloured stainless steel components which slot perfectly together like Tetris pieces, painting the wearers wrist in colours of the Tokyo Twilight.
It wouldn’t be a G-Shock if it didn’t come prepared to survive the conditions life throws at us, and the GMW-B5000PB-6D is no exception, exemplifying G-SHOCK‘s classic and reliable shock resistance structure in a metal form. The LED screen operates both in negative mode (to give your eyes a break if you’re staring at bright LED screens all day) or Super Illuminator mode, offering extra brightness to help your eyes out in dark surroundings.
G-Shock MRG-B2000BS-3A
Marking the 25th anniversary of the MRG range, the G-SHOCK MRG-B2000BS-3A owns a complexity that encapsulates a quarter century of style and innovation into one watch. Inspired by the Japanese concept of Hana-Basara (an amalgamation of the word hana, meaning ostentatious or brilliant, and basara, the Sanskrit word for ‘diamond’), the MRG-B2000BS-3A represents these ideas by creating a piece that is equal parts strong and elegant.
The bezel demonstrates master gem cutter Kazuhito Komatsu skill in working with faceted metal, creating a creative and unique design. It gets its understated but sophisticated shade from an iron-coloured DLC (diamond-like coating), inspired by ancient Japanese armours of a similar dark bluegreen tint. The face is busy, adopting gold baton indices which stand out on the dark background and the additional dials offer countdown timer and dual timezone functions. As always, the watch comes with G-SHOCK’s trademark resistance capabilities; shock resistance, magnetic resistance, and 200-metres water resistance.
With only 400 pieces produced globally, there are extremely limited numbers available in New Zealand. If you truly want the best of 25 years of G-SHOCK watchmaking, the MRG-B2000BS-3A is the only watch for you.
