Matawhero Irwin Chardonnay 2017 Gisborne
When an iconic New Zealand vineyard like Matawhero release a tribute wine you know it will be outstanding.
The Irwin Chardonnay is named in honour of the founders of Matawhero, the late Bill Irwin and his son Denis, who are recognised as industry leaders in modern viticulture.
Great wine comes from great vineyards. Using only the best fruit from low cropped Mendoza vines in the Tietjen vineyard, whose clay soils and limestone influences have produced numerous award-winning wines, this limited production wine is carefully hand crafted by winemaker Kim Crawford.
Using a combination of Hungarian and American oak barrels, wild yeast fermentation and extended time on lees, this perfectly structured wine has a combination of ripe stone fruit and tropical fruit flavours and aromas. It is richly textured with a creamy mouthfeel and lifted acidity giving balance to the palate. The toasted oak with hints of vanilla and spice leave a lasting impression.
