Movies To Get Through Lockdown With
Wonder Woman 1984
Helmed once again by director Patty Jenkins guiding hands, Diana has now spent enough time in our world to become the street wise hero we now know her as.
The movie kicks off back on her island home, where we see her prepare for becoming the hero she will one day become in some Olympic style events, before flashing forward to the future where we see a much more worn but confident Diana. It’s full of retro 80s throwbacks seen through the dazzled eyes of downed WWI pilot Chris Pine, who has miraculously returned from the grave to a much more open and booming world. This time around, he’s the wondrous child.
Kristen Wiig is the main super villain this time as she turns into a cheetah, which feels like the most 80s thing ever. I’d feel bad about telling you all this, but the trailers didn’t seem to care so why should I? Could a cat woman be Wonder Woman’s greatest foe yet? No, she killed a friggin god last time, why are we still discussing this? However, she isn’t the only threat Diana will have to contend with…
Young Wallander
Shows about cops might not be in favour at the moment, but this reboot of the Wallander franchise might be worth a look, if you hadn’t had enough reality for one lifetime. This young take on the grizzled detective sees one of his first cases, a hate crime involving the immigration tension in Sweden. It’s a powder keg situation, and he needs to close the case before it spills out into the rest of society.
Da 5 Bloods
Last month we were struck with the tragic news of Chadwick Boseman’s passing. The last released film he was in was Spike Lee’s Netflix release Da 5 Bloods, a heartfelt, brutal watch of five Vietnam veterans going back to open the skeletons in their closets to retrieve treasure they buried during the war. It’s not always an easy watch, but it’s definitely worth it.
