The Keywords People Use When Talking About Movies, And What they Actually Mean
People use very particular language when articulating how they felt about a film. Some of the words they use however are frontloaded with meaning that can tell you everything you need to know. Here’s a beginners guide to get you started.
“It’s fun!”
Usually spoken in a slightly higher pitch than the rest of the sentence, “it’s fun!” means “it’s not a good movie, but it is a great movie!”
Whether or not the movie is actually a good time is dependent on personal factors and whether or not you actually like fun. If you have a high opinion of yourself, avoid movies described like this, and use it to describe movies you know you shouldn’t like due to critical consensus.
“It’s important”
If somebody tells you a movie is “important”, that means watching it will feel like taking cultural homework. You’ll be checking a box so that at a party, people will nod in appreciation that someone else has had their time equally wasted.
“It’s definitely the ___ Star Wars Film”
Star Wars movies demand to only be compared to each other. If they were compared to anything else they’d crumble into dust. Fortunately episodes 4 through 6 get pushed further up the charts as more movies come out. They aren’t getting better, but they sure are getting better compared to the rest of Star Wars.
