The Suicide Squad + All The Movies You Can’t Miss This Month
The Suicide Squad
Don’t mistake The Suicide Squad for its dead on arrival predecessor, this one’s got “The” in the title! Maybe they could swap it out for an “A” at the beginning next time. Perhaps “the” should be underlined, as this could be the definitive team of misfits that define the series going forward.
Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the only familiar face, with all the rest being offcuts and dregs that will get fans of the comics into knots, but give everyday punters a bad case of the shrugs. It’s a lot of fun though, with a colourful cast which belies the colour palette of the movie itself.
Director James Gunn previously headed up all the Guardian’s of the Galaxy films as well as the indy weirdness of Super, a movie you should all definitely check out if it’s your first time hearing about it. DC’s franchise is finally in some safe hands. Initially offered a Superman film, Gunn was then given total free reign to make whatever he wanted with whoever he wanted. This freedom means we’re getting an R-rated film with villains we never thought we’d ever see on the big screen. Prepare for a good time.
Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
The original was a fun little romp, and director Patrick Hughes is back to recapture the lightning in a bottle that is Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. This time, with an added dash of Salma Hayek, whose character in the original was psychopathic at best, so giving her more screentime adds even more carnage and destruction. All we want in cinema these days is a good time, and this delivers.
OLD
Getting old is pretty scary, especially when it’s working in fast forward! M. Night Shyamalan decided to put a twist on a nice day out to the beach by making a casual family outing into a horror movie. It starts with a dead body and then everything gets weird. Dumb on paper, but genuinely freaky in execution. Starring Golden Globe-winner Gael García Bernal and Kiwi actress Thomasin McKenzie of Jojo Rabbit fame.
