Trailblazing Viognier, It’s pronounced “VEE – ON – YAY”
To make something truly great you need to take risks, and risks are usually things no one else is doing. Would you put your business on the line for greatness? Yalumba did, and it paid off. In the 1970s Yalumba saw Viognier being grown in the appellations of Condrieu and Cote Rotie, France. It’s a naturally low yielding variety, which isn’t good if you’re a vineyard going for bulk. On top of this fact is the amount of skill required to get it just right is rather high. These facts didn’t dissuade Yalumba from taking this variety home with them to Australia and get started planting its first three acres of the grape in 1980.
Their new crop was situated in the elevated slopes of the aptly named Eden Valley in South Australia. Over the next 10 years the vines grew in the cool climate and Yalumba experimented with the variety. Being the first significant planting they’re also among the oldest currently in Australia.
Each grape they grow is a continuation of its trailblazing history. The vines are still there today for a reason. They’ve launched an entire category of Australian viognier which has taken Yalumba’s name right around the world for how good it is. Does this mean they’ve beaten the French at their own game?
